James Minns is a senior mediator, arbitrator and property appraisal umpire with more than 35 years of practical legal experience and subject matter expertise in relation to all forms of insurance, intellectual property and corporate/commercial litigation. His specialized legal and business background enables him to bring a unique and thoughtful perspective to dispute resolution and conflict management.
James has earned a reputation for his skill in reviewing, identifying and analyzing complex factual and legal issues to help the parties formulate practical options and solutions leading to resolution of their disputes.
While in private practise James frequently appeared before the Ontario Superior Court, the Ontario Divisional Court, the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) and various tribunals including the Trademarks Opposition Board. He is a registered Trademark Agent at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO). James has acquired alternative dispute resolution competencies through formal training and on the job training. He has practised as a private mediator on numerous matters and was lead counsel on numerous private arbitration matters across Ontario.
James received his LL. B from the University of Western Ontario and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1982. James subsequently was awarded his M.B.A. from the University of Toronto Rotman School of Business in 1995 and in 2002 his Masters of Law in Intellectual Property from Osgoode Hall School at York University. James has a Negotiation Workshop Certification from Harvard Law School, a Mediation Process Certification from Conflict Dispute Resolution Associates, and an Arbitration Certification from the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Ontario (ADRIO), an Advanced Mediation Certificate from ADR Chambers and a Commercial Arbitration Certificate from the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society. James holds a Q. Med. and a Q. Arb. designation from the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Canada (ADRIC).
